We have recently commissioned a waste master capable of repurposing up to 450 kg of food waste in a day, with 20% of the waste coming out as soil conditioner. Our aim is to divert up to 164,250 kgs of food waste in a year and ultimately 821,250 kgs in 5 years. We are reducing our carbon footprint and ultimately reversing the adverse effects of climate change. We are achieving a circular economy and closing the loop by sending our soil conditioner to Bio farms across the Emirates. This will generate 164,700 kgs of soil conditioner in 5 years..

We have great teamwork that involves a few departments mainly the Purchasing Team who supported us since the time we conceptualized the project 2 years back by carrying out market studies with suppliers in the region to understand monthly consumables, ROI, etc.. Stewarding Department is the key driver in delivering the food waste to the Waste Master. F&B and Kitchen teams play a huge role in food segregation. All our associates segregate the food waste at the cafeterias. Quality Office is responsible to ensure there is full compliance with monitoring and verification.

We would like to upgrade the Waste Master from the existing 450kgs to a 1000kgs machine. The Resort has over 25 restaurants and outlets with big catering events therefore, we see an increase in food waste that will need a bigger solution. We are now a part of the UAE Food Pledge which we are also going to receive a certificate from the Ministry of Climate Change in recognition of our ongoing efforts towards repurposing food waste. We will align both our forecasting tool solutions Winnow to produce less and work in parallel with the Waste Master to repurpose the waste.
The British School of Bahrain has delivered for over 25 years the best British education in Bahrain. Inspired by the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the school aims to be at the forefront of educating its community through participation in sustainable activities and by leading by example.
As a response to the UN Sustainable Development Goal 12, the British School of Bahrain (BSB) aimed to contribute towards ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns through a variety of activities under the BSB Green Project. This project involved several activities such as reducing and repurposing food waste, recycling plastic and reusing and recycling old apparel. These activities not only helped the school reduce waste but also created the spirit of camaraderie between parents, staff, students and external partners as they work together towards achieving a common goal.
"The BSB Green Project aims to: 1. To reduce food waste through the ""My Clean Plate"" programme through educating and challenging students about taking only enough food. 2. To repurpose food waste from the canteen by using a composter and using the compost for our eco garden. 3. To reuse old uniforms by re-selling it and to sell old unusable and unwanted clothes to gain funds for use towards meaningful school projects. 4. To recycle plastic bottles by giving them to Simply Bottles for it to be converted to recycled textile."
The BSB Green Project at the British School of Bahrain contributed towards the reduction of environmental impact through effective waste management activities. This project has led to reduction of waste, reduction of cost and increased stakeholder trust. The School is currently participating in an ongoing responsible food consumption education campaign to help lessen food waste. Our Parent Community Ambassadors conducted second hand uniform sales and collection of old garments to raise funds that contributed towards the purchase of a composter. Our Junior Eco-Rangers, a club within the school is spearheading plastic bottle collection on campus to be donated for use to produce recycled textile and using the compost produced by food waste of the canteen in their eco garden. These simple activities have led to a big impact not only on the environment but to each individual stakeholder.
The BSB Green Project aligns with our 5-year Strategic Development Plan as the school aims to significantly reduce the school’s carbon footprint and embed a culture of environmental awareness within all students and staff.

The BSB Green Project was a collaborative initiative from several stakeholders within the team. The Responsible Food Consumption Education Programme is spearheaded by one of our teaching assistants, Alefiyah Rangwala, who works with the Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the project. The Eco-Rangers led by teachers, Debbie Venter and Ellen Sawyer together with 27 Junior School students lead the Simply Bottles plastic bottle collection and composting. The BSB Parent Community Ambassadors composed of 75 parent volunteers do the fundraising through the re-using and recycling of clothes.
The BSB Green Project is a long term initiative of the British School of Bahrain. We aim to continue educating our students through our various sustainable initiatives. Education and environmental awareness are keys to the success of this project. We plan to raise more funds from our recycling and re-using initiatives this year which will help fund the expansion of our eco-garden which we are aiming to produce the vegetables that will be used for our Food Technology Lab. Our sustainability initiatives are embedded in our 5 year strategic development plan to ensure continuity of our projects.
Spinneys Egypt is an established grocery retailer with a store network of 22 stores across different cities in Egypt and a growing E-commerce channel. One of our strategic goals is to achieve best in class ESG to fulfill our responsibility towards our environment, our stakeholders and our community.
The project aims to recycle used cooking oil. We partnered with "Tagadod" who collect the cooking oil from our stores and reuse it manufacturing biofuel and renewable fuel as alternative to disposing it in our sewage system. 8.5 pounds of collected used oil can equate to one gallon of renewable energy
Our main objective is to dispose of around 500-600 liters of used cooking oil per month. An additional objective is to inspire other grocery retailers in our tight network of modern retailers to follow suit and consequently contribute to the growth of Tagddod whose goals expand beyond reusing cooking oil only but broad food waste management.
"This will benefit our organization, community and environment by - use of biofuel and renewable fuel reduces emissions - preventing sewage system clogs and overflows - enhance animal feed - reduce landfills It will benefit our stakeholders"
It complements our goal of achieving the best in class ESG perfectly namely the "environment"

"1. Winnow Vision - The World’s First Automated Food Waste Tracking Using Artificial Intelligence Food waste costs the hospitality industry over 100bn annually. Kitchens can waste up to 20% of food purchased, which can affect the overall food cost. Looking forward with a goal to control the food wastage while equipping the chefs with modern AI technology tool, we planned to introduce WINNOW. With the help of winnow, our chefs can easily track what & how much food is going into the bin and can conduct a root cause analysis to control the wastage using their innovative ideas."
"Combining Marriott’s goals to reduce food waste by 50% by 2025 and Winnow’s capability to do so through positive results This is a breakthrough product in the fight against food waste because it offers a pathway to improved data quality. Food waste data is more accurate with AI. Winnow Vision has already surpassed human levels with an accuracy rate of over 80%. Our targets are: 1. To save at least 520,999 meals by plate 2. Reduce their food waste by >55% over a period of 12 month and achieve an ROI after 3-8 month using the system 3. To reduce at-least 86 Tons an CO2 emission"
"We are in process of implementing the system and the Key features are: ✓ Motion-activated camera automatically captures food waste images to provide deep insights into your food waste, while Digital scale automatically captures the weight of food waste ✓Kitchens using Winnow know exactly what they’re putting in their bins. Reports are generated daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis. ✓ Winnow Vision System processes food waste images and learns to recognize waste items automatically over time, saving staff time and improving data ac ✓ Based on the reports the chefs can change the recipe, production quantity and menu for the most wasted items."
It fits the Marriott goal for serve 360.As part of our 2025 Sustainability and Social Impact Goals, Marriott aims to reduce waste-to-landfill by 45% and food waste by 50% from a 2016 baseline
