The Sharjah Waste-to-Energy (WTE) plant stands as a testament to the UAE's commitment to sustainable solutions and low-carbon growth. This groundbreaking initiative, the first of its kind in the Middle East, has taken significant strides in transforming waste into a valuable resource for energy production.

As the UAE gears up to host COP28 from 30th November to 12th December 2023, the spotlight falls on the WTE plant, symbolising the nation's commitment to sustainability and environmental protection. Launched in 2022, this pioneering initiative has made significant strides in promoting sustainable waste management practices and minimising environmental impact. The following report delves into the achievements of the Sharjah WTE plant.

A profound grasp of the significance of sustainability

This journey began with a deep understanding of the importance of sustainability and the need to reduce the environmental footprint. While 60% of emissions in the UAE are generated by general and industrial waste accumulated in landfills, the Sharjah WTE plant has succeeded in processing more than 100,000 tonnes of waste in just one year, which is equivalent to the waste generated by 180,000 people annually. The plant also recovered over 250 tonnes of metal during its operations. As a result, Sharjah has achieved a new record in its zero-waste to landfill journey, achieving a waste diversion rate of 90 percent.

Khaled Al Huraimel, Group CEO of Beeah Group, said in a statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the Sharjah WTE plant is not just an environmental achievement, but also an example of the innovation and leadership that characterises the emirate of Sharjah and the UAE. It represents a significant step towards achieving the UAE's goals of diverting waste from landfills and the strategic initiative to reduce emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

He said that since it was inaugurated by H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, the plant has been following a steady and unwavering commitment to achieving sustainable waste management and supporting efforts to protect the environment, culminating in strengthening the country's efforts to lead global efforts to achieve carbon neutrality.

Al Huraimel added that the plant was not just an environmental solution, but also a way to provide clean and sustainable energy. It was able to generate enough electricity to power more than 28,000 homes in the emirate of Sharjah through its connection to the Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority (SEWA) network.

He pointed out that the Sharjah WTE plant is one of the national projects that achieve the future vision of the state by reaching carbon neutrality and investing in available opportunities and innovative ideas to enhance the sustainability of resources for future generations. The plant has achieved a number of qualitative achievements since its opening, as it has managed to offset 150,000 tonnes of harmful carbon dioxide emissions. These and other achievements by the plant have contributed to the rise in conversion rates to useful products that contribute to the circular economy in cooperation with Beeah's recycling programme.

He remarked that the Sharjah WTE plant stands as a beacon of positivity, serving as a testament to the feasibility of groundbreaking solutions to environmental issues. He emphasised that genuine commitment and collaboration can bring about positive transformations in our world. He stated that the station was the product of great efforts by the Emirates Waste to Energy Company, a joint venture between Bee'ah, the Middle East's leading and award-winning environmental management company, and Masdar, a subsidiary of Mubadala Investment Company and a pioneer in sustainable urban development.

He explained that this partnership aims to explore the prospects of developing more similar plants in the UAE and the region and providing solutions to divert waste away from landfills and achieve carbon neutrality.

Ambitious Achievements

The Sharjah Waste to Energy plant, the first plant of its kind in the Middle East, has received the "Future Fit Seal" awarded to government entities and national companies that design and implement exceptional, clear, specific and practical projects that enhance the UAE's readiness for the future.

Future Fit projects are assessed by the Government Development and The Future Office based on six key criteria: Human-Centered Approach, Economic and Social Value, Sustainable Practices, Proactivity and Innovation, Adaptability and Digital Readiness.

The Sharjah WTE Plant is located within the Bee'ah waste management complex in the Al Sajja area of Sharjah, where several other waste recycling facilities are also located, which support Bee'ah's efforts to divert all waste from landfills.

With the full flow of the event season underway, Ethara has revealed exciting new additions as part of ongoing sustainability initiatives with just weeks to go until the region’s biggest event weekend, the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Following on from the significant milestones in recent years, including achieving the FIA 3-Star Certification and becoming a signatory to the United Nations Sports for Climate Action, Ethara is set to implement several key new solutions and additions to support in its forward-thinking approach to hosting the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend and other major international events across its venues.

Set to debut at the 15th edition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit, the all-new Abu Dhabi GP mobile application will go live in the coming weeks, with the platform not only providing the ideal hub for fans to keep up to date on all the latest information across the event, but also housing their tickets as part of the organisation’s drive to reduce the need for physical tickets as in previous years.

The app also features an innovative sustainability-first initiative, incentivising the thousands of fans inside the Yas Marina Circuit venue to reduce waste, reuse and recycle for the chance to win exclusive discounts and experiences at the venue for the coming year.

Alongside this, the traditional Formula 1 Driver Parade which takes place prior to the race every Sunday will see a unique twist, with the introduction of an all-new electric truck parade, making its debut at the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

As the home of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Ethara and Yas Marina Circuit have also signed an agreement with Emerge, a joint venture between the UAE’s Masdar and France’s EDF, to introduce a new solar power car park system inside the venue, set to generate approximately 30% of the circuit’s total annual energy demand in a strategic, long-term project to reduce the venue’s need for additional energy sources.

The initiatives align with Formula 1’s Net Zero strategy and ongoing sustainability initiatives across the season, with Ethara focusing on consistently implementing impactful evolutions to its business-wide sustainability programme to lower the overall carbon footprint.

As Venues Portfolio Director, Danny Klima leads many sustainability-focused initiatives and believes the practical, impactful solutions and outcomes introduced over time are providing Ethara with consistent progress towards its goal of reaching Net Zero across all venues and its flagship event by 2030.

“The biggest focus is ensuring we are continuing to make consistent steps forward towards more sustainable practices as a whole, and bringing our Partners and loyal fans along with us towards our sustainability goals,” said Klima.

“Ultimately, this approach means we are providing fans the opportunity to make more sustainable choices. This year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is set to see record attendances across our venues – Yas Marina Circuit and Etihad Park – and so it’s key for us to give fans the opportunity to join our efforts, in small and big ways.”

In a year of growth for Ethara, 2023 has continuously seen new, innovative additions to the company’s sustainability initiatives. With Yas Marina Circuit’s new track-wide LED lighting system reducing total connected power requirements across the 5.28km track, and solar panelling across the iconic Abu Dhabi Hill to bring more practical inclusions to the programme, the historic 15th edition of the region’s biggest race weekend is set to be the most sustainable to date.

Klima added: “In recent years, we’ve hit some key markers to align with Formula 1’s sustainability approach and objective of reaching Net Zero by 2030, with the FIA 3-Star Certification and the United Nations Sports for Climate Action pledge and more recently being awarded the International Standards Organisation ISO 20121 for Sustainable Event Management recognising the way we plan and deliver the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and, ISO 14001 for Environmental management recognising the way we operate Yas Marina Circuit”.

“As a whole, we’re looking forward to welcoming our fans and working with our Partners and stakeholders to make this the most sustainable Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend yet.”

Industry experts have urged the implementation of measures to address refrigerant leaks in air-conditioning systems and the mandatory installation of indoor air quality (IAQ) sensors to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of the built environment in the UAE.

Marco Buoni, Managing Director of Centro Studi Galileo (CSG), an Italian training centre, and Iyad Al-Attar, a consultant specialised in indoor air quality and air filtration and a lecturer at several universities and institutes, spoke to Zawya Projects during the launch of HVACR Leadership Academy in Dubai by industry body Eurovent Middle East in October.

The Climate Group has noted that 40 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings. In the UAE, up to 70 percent of buildings’ energy consumption goes to cooling and ventilation, leading to an overall consumption of more than 50 percent.

Studies have estimated that 25 percent of energy savings can be achieved through simple preventive maintenance, 15 percent through better installation and 20 percent through better operations of HVACR (heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, cooling, and refrigeration) equipment.

Regular air-conditioning and refrigeration systems are designed to work properly for 20 years without maintenance, with just one percent leakage.

“This can be plugged by training HVACR technicians to install, maintain and periodically check the system properly,” he said.

Buoni also underscored the risks posed by the leakage of refrigerants, noting that they have higher Global Warming Potential (GWP) compared to CO2 emissions.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each kilogramme of leaked refrigerant results in the emission of more than 2,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere. Thus, an average-sized supermarket’s air conditioning system consumes approximately 100kg of refrigerants annually. A leakage rate of 10 percent means the release of at least 10kg of refrigerants into the atmosphere.

“This calls for implementing F-gas regulation, which restricts the use of refrigerants with a GWP value of more than 2,500. This includes the R-404A refrigerant used in refrigeration dryers,” said Buoni.

The F-gas regulation requires checking for refrigerant leaks and periodic checking of the system. It also stipulates mandatory certification and training of technicians.

However, except for Bahrain, the regulation has yet to be implemented elsewhere in the Middle East, he said.

The CSG executive said that new environment-friendly refrigerants or less polluting ones like propane are available for retrofitting and new systems.

Buoni said COP28 in Dubai will host an exclusive pavilion for cooling, and it is hoped that the stakeholders will express their willingness for the UAE to ratify the Kigali amendment as soon as possible to reduce the pollutant refrigerants.

The Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol is an international agreement to gradually reduce the consumption and production of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent GHGs widely used in refrigeration, air-conditioning and other industrial applications.

Though the UAE was a signatory to the amendment, the country has yet to ratify it. UAE Minister of Climate Change and Environment Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri had said that the UAE hopes to work to speed up the ratification process along with the other GCC nations.

Air quality

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) expert Iyad Al-Attar emphasised the importance of installing air quality sensors in all buildings due to the deteriorating air quality.

“IAQ measurement systems should be mandatory, as air quality should be by design and not by demand. Installing air quality measuring systems should be made compulsory for schools and public buildings,” he said.

He advised school management to invest in better IAQ sensing systems and filters to charge premium fees legitimately.

Civic authorities should insist on installing IAQ monitoring systems by providing incentives.

“Municipalities should institute an award for buildings with the best indoor air quality monitoring system,” he suggested.

The IAQ expert also suggested that governments could look at providing subsidies and interest-free loans for equipping buildings with air quality measuring systems.

“The benefits are indirect, that is, there will be less absenteeism in schools and offices and fewer hospitalisations when students, teachers and employees do not fall sick in a polluted environment,” he said.

He also suggested a measuring mechanism that not only measures solid particulate matter but also gaseous pollutants like ammonia, NOx (nitrogen oxides) and SOx (sulphur oxides).

He concluded that air quality should be an integral part of discussions on heating, ventilation and air conditioning system selection and human occupancy of new buildings.

“Air filtration now is available at a lower energy usage so that I can have high efficiency at a much lower energy usage than five, ten and 20 years ago. So we have what it takes. What remains is to position what we possess regarding technologies and innovation.”

Food security is a key issue that is given great attention in the United Arab Emirates. The country has developed strategic plans and practical programmes to ensure its food security, and has mobilised the community to support these plans in order to achieve food self-sufficiency and promote the concept of sustainable food.

Agriculture is one of the most important ways to ensure that the UAE has enough food to feed its people. The UAE has been supporting agriculture for 50 years, since the country was founded. This was started by the late founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Sheikh Zayed believed that agriculture was very important, and he made it a top priority.

This report by the Emirates News Agency (WAM) sheds light on home gardening in the UAE, as well as the government initiatives that are helping to promote it.

The efforts of the relevant authorities, both locally and federally, have not been limited to supporting agriculture through its extensive projects across the country. They have also included encouraging community initiatives such as home gardening, which are considered to be sustainable initiatives that accelerate the achievement of food self-sufficiency.

The cultivation of a home garden or the conversion of available spaces in buildings into small production units can help to promote the concept of sustainability, both economically, socially, and environmentally. It can also support the broader sustainability ecosystem in the community.

These community initiatives aimed at promoting home gardening meet the objectives of the "Impact" pillar of the "National Sustainability Campaign" that was recently launched in conjunction with preparations for the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), which will be held from November 30 to December 12 this year in Dubai Expo.

The campaign aims to promote positive environmental behaviour and raise awareness of environmental sustainability issues, and to encourage community participation. The "Impact" pillar showcases the positive results and impact of UAE sustainability initiatives across different areas.

Supportive laws

The UAE has established a supportive legal and regulatory framework for agriculture and created government agencies to promote sustainable agriculture and food security. These efforts were strengthened by the launch of the National Food Security Strategy 2051 and the establishment of the Emirates Council for Food Security, which aims to rapidly achieve food self-sufficiency, reduce the food gap, preserve soil, and optimize water use, especially groundwater.

The decision issued by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, in July 2018, on community agriculture, provides a regulatory framework for community and home gardening. It calls for the exploitation of residential areas, building roofs, and educational institutions to develop and expand agricultural activity and benefit from its effects to serve the community and educate it, while enhancing environmental benefits and increasing green spaces.

The decision focused on the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment's role in promoting agriculture, including community farming, planting in educational institutions, homes, residential complexes, and government buildings, water conservation, seed provision, marketing, and regulation.

Smart Solutions

The UAE has embraced pioneering home gardening initiatives, incorporating advanced smart solutions to support community agricultural projects. A notable example is the "Bustani" exhibition hosted at the Sustainable Villa in Masdar City, which showcases over 15 innovative solutions focusing on food production, water management, and waste recycling. These solutions include chemical-free, precision-irrigated home vegetable cultivation and smart technology integration in poultry farming.

Furthermore, the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park, in collaboration with global research institutions, is developing innovative methods for agricultural production and solar-powered water desalination as part of a holistic sustainability system.

International Praise

The United Arab Emirates' efforts to promote community agriculture have been praised internationally by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) during the participation of a delegation from the organisation in the second round of the "Grow Your Food" campaign organised by the Dubai Municipality, with the aim of encouraging families and schools in the UAE to grow vegetables and fruits at home that are compatible with the climate of the environment in the state.

FAO said that such innovative and stimulating initiatives encourage people to contribute to food provision through innovative ways and within the framework of environmental conservation and in accordance with the principles of sustainability.
